Ahh, Friday. This weekend Marie and I are heading up to Eagle River (about 3 hours north of where we live in Wisconsin) to her grandparent’s cottage. 2 days of pontoon boat rides, sunshine and home cooking. What else is there? We leave after I’m done with work today.

So I was having a discussion with my supervisor yesterday about technology. It was interesting, because she’s got a newspaper background, so she remembers the transition from typewriters to computers way back when. We both pretty much agreed that technology was advancing too fast and the gains we make from it are met with higher expectations and stress. I was glad, because I mentioned about reading the Unabomber’s Manifesto and didn’t want to come off as too big of a weird-o. But of course, last night we went and got a cell phone and are in the process of buying a new car and I’m wondering if I’m being a hypocrite. The cell phone is only for emergency purposes. We frequently go to visit Marie’s mom, dad and grandparents, the closest of which is a 2 hour drive away. With my 13 year old car, reliability is an issue. I just hope that we don’t turn into people who live and die by their cell phone, as I’ve seen friends and acquaintances do. I’m just finding it difficult to strive for simplicity and live in this modern world.

So anyway, I guess I’m no longer a columnist at Mr. Ridiculous. I sent in my May column in (you guessed it) May. Didn’t get published with the rest of the May columns. Just got an email that the June columns are posted as well. Didn’t get published with the rest of the June columns either. Ah well, I thought my pure anger against Ameritech was good column fodder, but I guess not.

We’re also buying a car. It’s a 98 Dodge Neon and it’s pretty nice. Will be the Marie-mobile. Looking at getting all the info before we head up north tonight and making the purchase on Monday or Tuesday. Rock on.

Random thoughts of the day:
My fingernails grow at an alarming rate.

Why can’t there be music clubs that people can join that feature good music?

Naps are cool but usually make my groggy when I wake up.

Are all grandmothers awesome cooks or is it just me?

Did you ask James or Malice about it at all?

One of the columns I had written a couple of months ago was lost; luckily it was one that I threw together at the last minute and wasn't anything special.

There's been some weird things going on, with Malice gone and now back again, James posting the columns for a while . . . I dunno. But it's no good thinking that it's just plain gone for no reason.

Yeah, I got the email from James. thanks for the tip though. I think my May column is trashed, I'm not sure if I've got a backup on disk. Oh well, if it wasn't meant to be, I'll have to scrape together some drivel and re-submit.

Who would win in a fight - Superman or Batman?

Ah, the age old argument. I would have to say that unless good ole Bruce Wayne has access to some kryptonite, it'd have to be Superman. Even though we all know that Batman was way cooler.

Yeah, I think Batman has the 'nuts' to be a superhero, since he's just a regular guy with 'wonderful toys'. Superman has mad skills with a 'z', but it's like rooting for Mark McGuire. They've both got help from more than Mother Nature.

Crimany, do you even have to ask?
Everyone knows that Batman would win. He is by far the superior superhero because of his intelligence. They don't call him the world's greatest detective for nothing.
He'd think of a foolproof trap for the big blue boyscout.

I dunno. Batman is a little too morose for me. One punch from Superman and it's lights out. Plus, Superman could act like a bird and take a dump on the Batmobile, thus thoroughly pissing off Batman.

My Mom's mom hated to cook.

Really? Well, end that pre-conception. I really like to cook but hate doing the dishes. But the place we just moved into has a dishwasher that does a slightly better than mediocre job at cleaning the dishes.

Any good books to recommend? I'm going to start one today on lunch called "Slaughterhouse", about the meat industry. Hopefully it'll gross me out enough to stop eating meat.

"Time and Again" by Jack Finney...it's sort of historical science fiction.
it rocks.
