Questions from microbie! (apparently I'm too old to figure out how to make tags work)

1. What's your favorite period in your son's life and why?

Wow - what a good question. Now is an interesting time, as he just completed his first semester of college. It's been so rewarding to see him come into his own and figure things out. It hasn't been an easy transition, but he's taken a lot of ownership and initiative. I also loved it when he was, like, seven and we'd spend the day playing and reading together and making each other laugh. Even his newborn days were great, but the lack of sleep was pretty brutal.

2. Where's your next vacation? (or, if you don't know, where would you want it be?)

I just got back from vacation last week - Kimberly and I spent a week in Jamaica, as her cousin was having a destination wedding. There were 30 or so of us from both families at the resort, and my first time in an all-inclusive since my own honeymoon 20+ years ago. It was relaxing and fun and a little bit tiresome. Kimberly prefers to DO ALL THE THINGS and I enjoy a slower pace, so it was great that she had several family members to do things with while I lounged by the pool or hung out in the room. Most of us went on a waterfall excursion, which was a lot of fun. No future vacations planned but I want to see the redwoods of California so would be fun to plan that for 2025.

3. Have you ever been to a game at Lambeau Field?

I've been fortunate enough to attend a dozen(?) games at Lambeau over the past 30 years. Two different friends have season tickets in their families, so the opportunities have been there. I haven't been to a game in probably 10 years and can only imagine they've gotten even pricier over the years. It is a tremendous experience to walk through the concourse and through your little tunnel to find your seat. It's a beautiful stadium and an incredible energetic experience to see a game there. That said, the seats are small, freezing cold bleacher rows with limited leg room. I now much prefer my own couch (and non-trough bathroom), but am glad I've gone to as many games as I did.

4. What's the story behind your username?

It's so dumb but here goes. In late high school and early college, my closest friends would make the trek from WI to Gurnee, IL to spend a weekend at Six Flags Great America. Rollercoaster, shitty funnel cakes, you get it. Anyway, they used to run a deal where your first day's ticket was full price but you could get a "Twicket" to come back the next day for like $10. So, a good deal. They would take your picture and give you a little printed ticket to present when you came back the next day. On account of my incredible coolness in high school, I'd taken to not smiling in pictures to convey my extreme levels of edginess. So, my Twicket had a picture of me stone-faced. I created a backstory of a kid who when to Great America with his parents, but they were tragically killed in an Iron Eagle mishap. He was heartbroken about his loss, but couldn't pass up a good deal to go back to the park the next day to get more nachos and those Looney Tunes t-shirts where Bugs Bunny was wearing backwards jeans for some reason. Hence, his unsmiling face when he should've been in a pretty happy state of mind.

5. How are you feeling about work these days?

Ugh, it's still so dumb. A long term employee finally got fired (arguably, five years too late) for underperforming and working a second job during company time. The employee is now suing us for wrongful discharge, because Canadian labor laws are different than in the US. Clients are leaving us because we haven't innovated in years. We're working internally on a 2.0 version of our software but I fear it's too little, too late. I've been actively applying for other jobs but the market (at least for me) is brutal. I'm lucky to even get a "thanks but no thanks" email for jobs I'm fully qualified for. Everyone wants to work remote in my field, so the competition is much stronger. Hopefuly that next year yields some new opportunities or an upturn at my company.
