Oh God.

I feel like such an idiot.

I can't believe it.

I totally forgot what happened three years ago today.

NEVER FORGET

You didn't lose anybody in the attacks, though, did you? I almost overlooked the day for that reason. It's scary and horrible, yes, but not as personal to me as it could be.

Hey brother, don't feel bad. You remembered soon enough. As long as you take the time to reflect on what it meant to you, then that is enough.

I'm still looking for one of those to go between my Kerry and my MoveOn stickers. Where do rednecks shop? I think I may have to brave a trip to Wally World.

*gasp*

I can't BELIEVE you could forget that my mom turned 53 three years ago! HOW COULD YOU FORGET?!

Just kidding. Though it is her birthday, and that's what I choose to focus on. :)

If it makes you feel better, even though I live in D.C. and was less than a mile from the Pentagon on 9/11, I chose not to memorialize it today. With all of the Iraq stuff going on, I feel like 9/11 has been trivialized in a lot of ways. It's such a soundbite now that it's lost most of its emotional impact for me. As someone who was in the midst of the chaos, I find that particularly sad.

Jon Stewart said, and this was, I think, on the first anniversary, that to set aside time to "remember the attacks" or whatever is just absurd because, for most people, a day doesn't go by where 9/11 or terrorism in the US in general doesn't come up. Nobody's forgotten ... most people aren't thinking about it any less ... how do you "extra-remember" something?

And I can agree with all of that. Still.

This was precisely the point of my entry - let's not cheapen the events by thinking that people don't remember them.

I may feel differently had I known someone who was killed then, but I wouldn't want their memory to be a slogan afixed to a bumper or grocery store window.
