Who starts a diet plan after gaining EIGHT POUNDS?

And what is he, like, 5'4" or something if he's 140# with a 32-inch waistline? Sounds like somebody's suing out of discontent from being short!

i'm sorry, people who look at that diet and think, "why yes, that looks healthy!!" deserve the clogged arteries and ketosis and heart disease and kidney failure. it would be so much easier to just read a basic health textbook and realize that PEOPLE NEED CARBOHYDRATES TO FUNCTION, and FAT IN MASSIVE AMOUNTS IS BAD FOR YOU.

Right. So what if we've learned that eating too much red meat, eggs, and bacon is bad for us? Atkins says I'll lose weight if I have a burger of that, as long as I don't eat the bun! Losing weight = I'm healthy! Yay!

I'm always reminded of one of my mom's lectures: "You can eat whatever you want, but you have to do it in moderation."

I diet if I gain a pound over my acceptable weight range (which has a 4 pound spread). I think that constant vigilance is key to long-term thinness.

On the flip side, if I unintentionally lose too much weight (as happened recently), then I get to eat two lunches, one of which must include ice cream.

I'm ten pounds heavier than I was a few years ago, and I don't give a shit. I prefer exercise to dieting, at any rate. Big fan of eating lots and working it all off.

that's exactly it. when did losing weight quickly become tantamount to health?? hey, when i was in high school, i developed an anxiety disorder and couldn't eat anything but saltines, and i lost thirty pounds in a month! if i can do it, so can you! so scary.

I think it's a lack of education that causes these things to happen. Someone says eating a certain way is good, but then 5 years down the road, studies show you will drop dead if you eat those foods.

Mr atkins was not a healthy man when he made this diet, nor was he his target weight when he died. I think that just goes to show you.

I heard that the diet was originally intended for the severely overweight as a rapid way to lose weight to the point where they could exercise safely.

In any event, carbs are delicious.

That's the one thing that everyone always seems to forget about Atkins -- it was only ever intended, as far as I know, for SEVERELY overweight people. Indeed.

He so is. Not only did he write about beer for a living (making my very popular in college) and now write about outdoors stuff, but he also plays soccer for a league and bass guitar for a blues band. He's one of my best friends.
