I had a dream not that long ago that my brother was the Orkin Man. You know those weird dreams where you're back at the house you grew up in, except now it has like 9 floors to it, one of which is your high school homeroom and another is the lunchroom from your work? Anyway, I found the Orkin Man outfit lying on the floor in his room and quickly figured it out.

It's going to be a busy week - tonight I'm hoping to mow the lawn and complete my search and destroy mission on the dandelions. Tomorrow I'm playing extra long cribbage with Terry, as we haven't played for a while. Wednesday Marie and I are going to a 'socially responsible' financial planner in GB to decide how to invest some of Marie's money. Thursday is the first of three orientation meetings for the UU church.

Our UU church has a sister church in Transylvania and the reverend and his wife are visiting Appleton for three weeks. The visiting reverend gave part of the sermon and it was really interesting. It made me think about how large the world really is. His wife led the children's service as well.

I just got a resume from Mohammad Ali. Apparently, he lives in Ohio.

Anyone have experience with FireWire cards? Apparently I need one to get my homemade porn videos cat videos from the camcorder to the computer. Help a brotha out!

Transylvania always makes me think of one of the Halloween episodes of "The Simpsons":

Homer: We're going to...PENNSYLVANIA!

*sighs*

Eyes bigger than your stomach, eh, Flanders?

Heh. I have been working in the streaming industry for 4 years now. I'm very familiar with the firewire. The good thing about them is the fact that the capture cards are cheap. Do you have all that stuff already?

I've got a Sony DV camcorder - I just got a IEEE 1394(?) cable on Friday. Checked the home computer and saw no way to plug in the cable to the computer. Is there a particular FireWire card you'd recommend? I've installed RAM before and am comfortable installing it myself, especially with WinXP.

Ultimately, I'd like to transfer a number of videos that I've got on tape to the computer, so I can burn them to DVD. Do you know how much HD space I'll need for, say, an hour long video? I've got roughly 50GB available on a 120GB hard drive. Granted, it would be temporary until I'd put it on DVD.

Thanks for the help!

You'll need to buy any 1394 capture card. They all perform the same since DV is a set ratio and playback, unlike Video For Windows/analog. I'd go for a cheap one at Circuit City. They will be priced based on which video suite software they come with. You can usually get the card and a free version of Ulead software. The good thing about XP is that it comes with Windows Movie Maker so that people wanting to use it for home video can easily transfer it over.

Once you install the capture card in a PCI slot, you'll just plug your firewire up to that, open the video editing software, flip your camera on to VCR playback and go to town capturing.

The way I do it is capture full frames uncompressed at 4:3 ratio. That's like 720 x 480. One hour of video like that is usually about 12-15GB. After it's captured into an AVI, I transcode it into a Windows Media Video which makes it about 300MB. Windows Movie Maker offers exporting to WMV only, so you could delete your source file after you exported it and free up that space again. The whole system is really easy to use.

SMRT!

I really appreciate all the info - I think I'll pick one up soon and give it a shot. Sounds pretty easy (the camcorder manual made it sound pretty simple too). I've also got the Sonic suite (I think they do both CD and DVD burning) that has some software for capturing directly from the camcorder. Good to know I've got a few options and that Microsoft did something right with XP!

I said SMRT to my boss (who is my age) and then had to spend the next 15 minutes explaining what it meant.

I sat next to a guy on the train once who was carrying a tote bag from a trade show or convention. It proudly proclaimed him a member of the Society for Magnetic Resonance Technicians.
