8's are called snowmen

Last night, sitting in a poorly decorated hotel room, I realized why I can never have cable TV again.

It's all I would do.

Since dropping down to basic service when we moved in June, my television viewing has dropped by at least 50%. I spend more time on the computer but also spend more time reading and listening to music. I'm used to limited options for television: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, UPN, WB, public access, PBS and that channel that always has church on it. Last night I had 74 channels to pick from. And pick from I did.

I spent two hours watching Celebrity Poker Showdown and am making plans to spend the rest of my life playing nothing but Texas Hold 'Um. For anyone who saw the episodes, I was glad that David Cross won and was rooting against (literally pounding the bed with my fists and crying out "Lose, you fucking hack!" to) Scott Stapp. There are few people in the music world I despise more than Mr. Creed himself. He spent the entire time a) not knowing what to bet (at one point, asking what 'call' means) and b) arguing that he won hands that he clearly lost. Um, a pair beats high card everytime, Jebus. Even Mitten knows that. To top it off, the charity he was playing for was his own. Tacky? Unbelievably. I was pleased when he lost and am ashamed for admitting so.

I also watched most of Insomniac and the Daily Show. I miss Comedy Central. A lot.

I wound down by reading Dude, Where's My Country (which is top notch, by the way) but didn't fall asleep until after midnight. The first thing I do upon entering a hotel room is throwing the comforter on the floor. I'm not comforted by the thought of covering myself with a sexual-drippings-and-drool-encrusted blanket, thanks. So I was cold last night, wrapped up in the sheet and thin blanket, curled in the fetal position hugging one of three too small, too poofy pillows.

After a breakfast of Froot Loops and a bagel, Imade mway to the EC office. (yes, i'm still typing on this stupid laptop). I went over the orientation stuff with the new intern, met the new sr. manager and have been catching up on a few minor things until I can leave (around noon).

Tonight I'm hleping my dad put the finishing touches on our bookcases. They are going to be awesome and we need to come up with a thank you gift for him beyond taking him out to eat.

I need to lift weights again tonight. The thrill has not (yet) worn off.

I fail to understand why, with all of the digitcal-cable and "On Demand" services cable companies keep trying to foist, there's no way to buy channels a la carte. Why do I need to get 87 channels I'll never watch to be able to subscribe to Comedy Central and Bravo's "The West Wing" reruns?

Precisely. I'd easily pay $20 for the local channels and $1 per additional channel. Cable company gets more $ and consumers get what they want without having to flip through unneeded programs.

Man, when I take over things are going to be pretty sweet.

I think I'd be in big trouble if we had a TV. I didn't realize how addicting it was until I was at my inlaws. Mum flipped on the TV, and my eyes - SMACK! - glued to the screen. I didn't feel inclined to do much else.

Oh, I miss Comedy Central, too! The last time I watched it was during my honeymoon. There was this skit show that was on late at night. I don't remember what it was called. I do recall that the cast, at times, ran around in animal suits.

Hey man, next time you're in EC and have extra time, give me a call or shoot me an email.

Basic TV???...eeek...I could not survive without my access to Lifetime, Nickelodeon, TNT, CSPAN, or Sci-Fi Channel. :-P

Will do. Damn, that's a long ride.

The transition wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. But it still wasn't easy.

I really wish you could get cable ala carte. You kind've can with digital cable as you can pick from different tiers, but they're all like the garage sale where somebody puts something good in a bag full of crap and you have to deal with the shit to get to the good stuff.

I'm sick of paying $80 a month for internet and 72 channels that I watch about 5 out of. (And yes, you have to have cable to get internet. How's that work??)

Exactly. Where's the freedom of choice?
