Shit, now I have to create Republicans
Dec. 11th, 2003 03:14 pmPresidential issue #419 - all atheletes are required to take remedial English. I've never winced more than driving home last night, listening to Gilbert Brown and Darren Sharper on sports radio. Shame on me for expecting to hear something intelligent on sports radio, but at least let me hear the tired cliches it in proper English.
We got new carpeting in the office this week and it smells good. The old carpeting was tan (!) and stained. The new stuff is a light burgandy (although given my color blindness, it might be yellow) and it looks pretty nice. They had some medieval device to remove the old carpeting involving hooks and a pulley. It was fun to sit in my office and watch it churn by. I played some Karate to make the carpeting employees think I was cool, but they didn't notice. Fuckers.
Democracy, schemocracy.
We terminated an employee too. It was the first time I was the bearer of bad news, usually it's the person's manager. It went really well (the ex-employee thanked me and shook my hand before leaving), but it still isn't a part of the job I enjoy. I feel bad because it was someone that I hired a few months ago. Luckily, my boss (who also interviewed her separately) said "We just got fooled", so I felt better. Not that the employee's job performance is a reflection on me directly, but there are people here who relish in the fact when other employees fuck up. Nothing like taking joy in the suffering of others, eh?
In August, I went on a training 'tour' to 6 different offices to hold 7 training sessions on the Predictive Index, something I was certified in only two months prior. Each participant filled out an anonymous survey about the value of the training session and how I did, etc. It was nice to see that people thought I did a good job (except for the first session, which I was horrendously nervous and managed to fit a 2 hour presentation into about 35 minutes. Yeah, it was bad.) and that they liked the way I presented the material. A few kind words can really go a long way.
Upon arriving home from work on Monday, I noticed something hanging on the front door knob (we always come in through the garage). It was a birthday present for Marie (who turned the big 25 last Friday - I'm no longer rocking the cradle) from my sister-in-law. We haven't talked to her since August after she didn't return a few phone calls to us (and as she and my brother were going through some tough times). It was weirdly uncomfortable but I think getting through the awkwardness of the situation is important. It's still up in the air if we're all getting together for the holidays. In any event, Marie left a message for her with thanks. I wonder if she'll call us back.
The meeting last night with my two former co-workers turned out to just be asking for some HR advice. They are both leaving their jobs and are anticipating a shitstorm from their boss. So, I took 20 minutes out of my day and got a free vanilla chai for my efforts. I kept the fact that I think they're making a mistake to myself.
I think a visit to the chiropractor is in order. My neck is hurting something fierce.
