From zero cats to two cats in 4 months. Unbelievable.

Lemme 'splain.

One of our tax partners, R, called me into her office yesterday with an 'I got a present for Mitten' line. I go over and see a 7 month old white cat meandering around her office. R's friend's neighbors are in a bit of trouble - can't feed the kids, husband is hitting the wife, and so forth. Cat has been neglected (her tail is the usual length, but there is a nub at the end - she thinks it got caught in a door, hopefully unintentionally) and underfed (but not drastically - she's skinnier than Mitten, but not much) and the family can't take care of itself, let alone a cat. R already has two cats and asks if we want to take her in.

The cat is adorable and very starved for affection. She cuddles up to me quickly and sets purring to HIGH. I call Marie and she comes over to check out the cat. We really think Mitten needs a companion since she's so needy when we come home from work. Marie is taking the cat to the vet this afternoon (since they don't think she's ever been to one) and we'll find out their strategies for how to introduce the cats to each other. She spent the night in the spare bedroom with food, water and litter and the door closed. Mitten spent most of the night standing guard outside the door and trying to smoosh her face under the door to see what was going on.

The nice thing is two other employees had asked about her and will take her (ok, one of them will take her) if she doesn't get along with Mitten. I think over time the two of them will become thick as outside-the-litter-box-shitting thieves. Time will tell. In any event, she'll be in a good home and be well taken care of, no matter where she ends up.

"Coup Coup"

Damn I love Bill Hicks....

Cats are a little like tribbles. You get one stray or needy one and your name goes up on the underground billboard as sanctuary. Just the way it works. Enjoy :)

www.shootspeed.com - a large collection of unreleased Hicks stuff. Not that you heard it from me, or anything.

I hope we can stop at two, but I'm not making any promises ;)

Rock on ;o)
I was going to leave an "I love Bill HIcks" comment too so I'll take this piece of advice that I certainly didn't hear from you.

That's so awesome that you are able to take her in, hopefully she'll get along with Mitten! :)

sidenote: My childhood cat was named Mittens :)

We'll find a way to all get along, I hope.

I'll have to post pictures soon.

I read this, giggled, and thought, "Give me a break. You're going to fall for this new kitty, and find a way to make the kitties get along!"

If you have the room, you might want to invest in two litter boxes. I hear that some cats prefer their own (and poop outside of the one litter box if that's all there is).

Your powers of deduction are unstoppable.

We'll go with two boxes. Supposedly you're supposed to have one more than the total number of cats you have, but we'd like to keep the scent of CatCrap to a minimum. Mitten's been pooping outside of her box (thankfully, on tile) when she's stressed.

Guess what I woke up to this morning...?

Cats are kind of an addiction. i never thought I'd end up with four. I found that with time, any cat will get along with any other cat. they just need to adjust and work out their pecking order.

Hopefully the cats will just "take to each other." That's what, fortunately, happened with our two,one of which we adopted; the other was "inherited" from a friend who had to move into a non-cat-friendly environment. Tilda, the former, and Emma are now inseparable, and oh-so-cutely groom eachother and wrestle, and sleep curled into one, furry, eight-legged ball.

Buuut, before Emma came along, we tried to take in Cullen's brother's cat, Monroe, and that didn't go over well with Tilda at all. In fact, Tilda hid behind the couch for Monroe's entire stay. We had to literally carry Tilda to and from the litter box -- that's how unduly petrified she was of Monroe.

There are, apparently, desensitizing tactics one can use to make cats more comfortable around one another. But I'm of the opinion that they're like people: they like one another or they don't or they're indifferent. Who can explain why?

I think Mitten will grow to love having Snowball III around. She just needs time to adjust. Snowball III is just happy to be in a good home, I think we could give her a mowhawk and she'd still be content.

Hmmm...

Nah, better not.
