This weekend found Marie and I in Eagle River, aka Paradise at Marie’s grandparent’s cottage. The weather was fantastic and I got a lot of reading done too. But let me back up a bit…

Friday:
Marie and I went to the library after work on Friday and got a slew of books. I got the fourth Harry Potter book (and am about 1/3rd of the way through it), Vonnegut’s “Hocus Pocus” (an interesting read, to say the least), Huxley’s “Island”, and assorted other interesting books.

After we got back, Eric and Lori came over to watch the Packer game. The game got increasingly boring as the time went on, and we were all just about asleep by the end of the 3rd quarter. Eric and Lori decided to leave and Marie and I went to sleep.

Saturday:
We got up early to get packed up and head to Kohl’s since it’s on the way and they were having a huge sale. Plus, we have all kinds of gift cards leftover from the wedding to use up. Marie got a few new shirts and I got 3 pairs of dress socks, a pair of black dress pants and a long sleeve tan (mushroom?) colored shirt. Oh, and two pairs of boxer briefs.

Afterwards we put some air in Marie’s tires (we took the Neon) and got some Chinese food for lunch. Then, it was off to Eagle River. It’s about a 3 hour drive and it was pretty peaceful. Listened to the Rollins discs I got in the mail recently and the f2f compilation CD I got from a friend in Florida. Kinda like a friend from the future, but not really.

Got to ER around 2 or so, did some reading and visiting, went through some of our honeymoon pictures with Marie’s grandparents. Marie’s grandparents went to church and we watched some television (college football, as Marie’s step dad is a big fan) and did more reading. Had chicken on the grill and a good rice/green bean dish that Marie’s mom made. Marie and I have made the slight concession that we could eat meat on the weekends and remain meat free the rest of the time. It would be very hard to go meat-free and not upset the relatives. The more I think about it, that sounds like the lame way out, but for now, it’s going to have to do.

Saturday night we watched the Badger game, it was pretty good. They lost, but it was a close one.

Sunday I did more reading, went on a few walks with Marie, went out on the pontoon boat for a nice ride and of course, more reading. Had lasagna for supper, which really hit the spot. Homemade carrot cake for dessert, do you see why I call this place paradise? Watched the wedding video as well to relive our ceremony. We’ve been married for a month, how cool is that?

Monday was pretty much getting packed up and leaving after lunch. Marie’s great aunt left their dog for the weekend in Eagle River as they headed to Michigan, and since she lives in Appleton, we dropped off the dog, Tyler, on the way back. Unfortunately, on the way back we had a problem with the Neon. I opened up the sunroof to enjoy the sunshine and when I went to close it, it stopped, leaving 3/4th of it still open. Not exactly the way we want it to be. So Marie is going to take it to the place we bought it today and see if they can fix it. We’ve had the car for 3 months and it’s already got problems. Of course, it is 3 years old, but still.

Ah well, could be worse.

Random thoughts of the day:
I always get inspired on vacation but have little inspiration when I get back home. Help?

I think lunch might possibly be my favorite part of the day. I’m looking forward to more Harry Potter.

I’m heading over to Terry, Eric and Brian’s tonight (here on out known as “They Guys’”) to play some Madden 2002. Our new season starts on Sunday. I’m the Raiders, Terry is the 49ers, Eric is the Saints and Brian is the Chargers. Should be a good year, but the new version is harder than the last, so I need some practice time.

My boxer briefs are really comfortable. I might be making the switch from boxers to boxer briefs for good, because they are a good time in my pants.

i've learned that most relatives, even the most stubborn meat eaters, tend to be supportive. they don't always agree, and you might get some shit every once in a while, but i think most everyone seems to understand. I've only once (or twice) met someone who actually seemed to be offended by my vegetarianism, and that person was a gun-toting, deer-shooting, patriachist bastard (boy my mom seems to have wonderful taste in men). hey, maybe they'll like the challange of having to prepare different kinds of meals from now on?

whatever the case, i wouldn't worry too much about it. going veggie is a big change, but any supportive family will help you through it, even if they don't agree with it.

Yeah, I think we need to put our foot (our feet?) down about it. I think that relatives couldn't fathom meal preparation without having animal products being a big part of it. I think with anything, we are in a transition phase and will slowly but surely eradicate meat from our diet, and I think most are open minded. I think a good way to start would be to bring meals along with us if we go somewhere for the weekend and give a new address a try.

Thanks for the support, dood.

Dear god, 'address a try'? I meant recipe. Don't listen to NPR and type a reply at the same time...
