We spent a few hours in my grandfather’s hospital room last night. My aunt and uncle were there as well. We listened to stories from my grandfather and routinely assured him that our jobs were going well. He’s always worried that we aren’t happy with our jobs or we aren’t getting paid enough. He told us of jobs he had when he was a kid, the state of the world, his opinion on overweight people (“big is beautiful”), friends that he’s had that have passed away, and so forth. He also told us that they aren’t making any new 7UP, once what’s on the shelves is gone, it’s gone. So if that’s true, you heard it from my grandfather first.

He seemed so complacent and was reflective about his life. He seemed at peace and understood that he is coming to the end of his life. Not in a sad way, but in an appreciation of how full and good his life has been. I really hope that once he is out of the hospital, I can ‘interview’ him on video about his life. I cringe at the thought of losing that history when he passes on. If I’m anywhere near as coherent when I’m half his age, I’ll be overjoyed.

He turned 84 today. Most elderly people scowl at the thought of another year passing. He stares it right in the face, announcing it to people weeks before hand (“Only 10 days until my birthday!”). I hope I’ve inherited that gusto from him.

In underwear news (as it seems to be the topic of the week), while I was scraping my windshield this morning, I noticed a frozen pair of Calvin Klein tighty whities frozen to the parking lot. Unless it is a laundry-related loss, I cannot comprehend having ones underwear frozen to anything.

I got a haircut over my lunch hour today. I really like the feeling of a fresh haircut. Marie made the observation that we both went to “corporate” stylists (me to Cost Cutters and she to JC Penney) and that we should support local businesses (as all of the cool kids are doing, so I’m told). So, I walked downtown to a barbershop (with a barber pole and everything!) and got a trim while listening to Paul Harvey on the radio. It was keen.

Tonight I will smite mine enemy (Terry) in a valiant battle of cribbage-related wits.
Speaking of which, go here: http://www.skipace.com/JvPics/index.htm to see some pictures of my goofy friends and me. [livejournal.com profile] jonnyv is Jon, Terry is Terry, Eric is Eric and the beardless guy is me. There are even a few pictures of Marie there too!

Your grandfather sounds like a wonderful person. How lucky you are to be getting those stories from him. :)

I envy you for being able to talk to your grandfather and hear his history and stories. I'll never get that wisdom, and I'm truly sad about that.
