I thought killing Timothy McVeigh was supposed to SOLVE our terrorist problem...

Hey Carrie (A),

I am as shocked as you are about the tragedy in NY and Washington. I must honestly say that I’m not surprised about the outcome, but I didn’t see it coming. We’ve got foreign policy issues with other countries and, due to our role as the ‘bully’ in the world, it was only a matter of time before we got pushed around. I don’t think war is a result, most of the more powerful countires are too closely tied into our financial institutions. If Japan declares war on us, even if they would win, they would suffer a huge blow to their economy and infrastructure. Same goes for most other European/Asian countries.

The scariest thing for me was I always thought they would hit our information (hacking, viruses, shutting down the stock market, etc) and not (pardon the term) old-fashioned terrorism. Goes to show that no matter how strong we think we are, we are vulnerable to attacks at anytime.

My boss and I were talking about it and how now that the good ol’ US has shipped most of it’s manufacturing jobs overseas, if we were to go to war, we’d be relying on our employment counter-parts (Mexico, Asia, etc) to supply us with the supplies for war. So if a country decides to declare war and sides with one of those employment counter-parts of ours, we would be truly in trouble. Shipping jobs out of the country in an effort to expand profits can, and I think ultimately will, come back around to bite us in the ass.

As for the 9-11 (September 11th) correlation, I’m not sure. Obviously it has undertones of America, since it is our number for emergency, but would that maybe point to someone doing so from the US, or would a foreign country know of the meaning? Another interesting point is that the attack(s) were done in such a way as to get mass exposure. The first plane hits the first tower, to get the news coverage. Then the second plane hits and is broadcast live to all of America. Same for the Pentagon attack. Whoever is behind it was obviously sending a message and to scare the American people. But to give in to terror means the terrorists have won.

I hope that, if anything, it opens our government’s eyes to the needs of foreign countries and the fact that they will no longer stand idly by and accept the conditions we have placed upon them (through false governments, arms deals, etc, etc, etc). I really don’t think war is the next step, but I think there will be a heightened (and unneeded) focus on security. Instead of trying to prevent the next attack by security, how about using politics and negotiations to come to an understanding and common ground?

Take care of yourself,
Brian
