After nearly four years of Windows 98, I've decided to get a new system. I'm a big fan of using a computer for more than 20 minutes before needing to reboot multiple times. Hence my desire to get XP. I've thought about upgrading my current computer, but I think a new system is in order. I don't need a monitor, scanner, printer or anything, just the CPU.

Anyway, I'm looking at buying a computer from Milwaukee PC - the Performance 4000 series (http://www.milwaukeepc.com/mpc2config.asp?kkit=440148). I've bought from them before and am confident in their products.

I know a fair amount about computer, but nothing about parts. It seems like the defaults are going to be more than I need (I primarily the computer for mid-level gaming (Diablo II, Max Payne, etc) and internet). Just curious if anyone had recommendations on parts or if they think the default system is a good one. I hope this is along the lines of what the community is for and appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Thanks in advance.

I'm a big computer nerd, but I'll tell ya...I don't really have anything all that special.

I play games a lot too. Mostly Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: Allied Assult and Call of Duty.

Lots of RAM and a good video card will make your system seem more powerful. I have an nVidia GeForce 5600 Ultra with 256MB on-board. That helps my system a lot when I'm playing games.

RAM and a good video card would be my main suggestions. I also found that the hard drives with the 8MB cache and 7200 RPM's seem to help my gameplay a bit.

I think I'm going to load up on RAM and get a slightly better video card. I appreciate the advice!

I remember many years ago being so excited about purchasing an 8MB chip of RAM for $180. My, how things have changed!

It all depends on what you wanna do with it. The bottom level video/sound support are more than adiquate for any casual user. If you're really up on gaming, go for the video upgrade. If you're really up on music (production or just hi-fi) go for the Audigy Platinum. The Audigy Platinum r0x0rz and will give you excellent sound quality. (I could go into why, but I won't.)

And max out the ram. You can never have enough of that.

512... I dunno man, that's becoming the new 256. I wouldn't settle for less than a gig. ;)
