It was at the local CD exchange shop near campus. I was selling some CDs after my interview, including an Operation Ivy disc that I bought based on the Green Day influence of several years ago. It's a good CD, just out of my heavy rotation. Anyway, after a while the clerk called me over and said he looked through them and could offer me $15 for the stack of 7 or 8 discs. It was more than I thought, so I was pleased. He asked me "Are you sure you want to get rid of this one", holding up the Op Ivy case. He went on to tell me that they were his favorite band and it makes him sad to see people getting rid of them. He had on the typical punk rock outfit while I was clad in my black suit. I found two CDs I wanted (Ben Folds Five and Rollins Band) and he asked me if I had read any of Hank's books. This launched me into a fanboy dissertation about how great Hank was and that he (the clerk) should go see him in either Madison (January 28th, Barrymore Theater) or Milwaukee (January 29th, Eagle's Ballroom). He said that he would definitely check him out and I was hopeful that he would. It was a nice moment.

Anyway, the interview went well and I hope to hear something by week's end. I'll be surprised if I don't get an offer. I also went to Kinko's to fax some information to the company doing the background check for the job. A 12 page fax to Madison cost me $19. This seems ridiculously overpriced to me, but I don't want to send it from work and risk raising more eyebrows than I already do.

Got home and had the best grilled cheese sandwich I've had in a few years. Perfection, it was. Marie was at a friend's making cards, so I was complacent sitting in my underwear eating dinner and watching The Simpsons. Consolidated some random scraps of paper and prayed for a Very Brady Monday Night Football game. Turns out I won 45-43, just barely squeaking by [livejournal.com profile] jonnyv. I'll face Terry for the League Championship next week, it should be one hell of a game.

I got this in one of my HR newsletters and it made me rather upset:

"Black Names" and "White Names": Marianne Bertrand of the University of Chicago and Sendhil Mullainathan of MIT applied for 1,300 jobs in Boston and Chicago using some names common to whites, like Kristen and Brad, and some names common to blacks, like Tamika and Tyrone. Applicants with the "white names" were 50 percent more likely to get called in for an interview, as compared to the applicants with the names that "sounded black." About 10.1 percent of applicants with names that sounded white were called in for an interview. About 6.7 percent of applicants with names that sounded black were called. Bertrand says that the results cannot be explained by arguing that the "black names" she used were obscure, and that people are merely turned off by unusual or fanciful names. "These are not weird, freaky names,"
she says.

We've got a long way to go.

I'm officially worried about [livejournal.com profile] blue_sunshine and starting to get worried about Jeremy and Kristie. I haven't heard from them since they got back from the wedding, with a phone call and email message both unreturned. Not good.

Today I saw $25,000 in cash. I was putting together the holiday bonuses (which had a "Merry Christmas!" label on each, to my dismay) and between all the staff members, that's the total amount that will be distributed tomorrow. We give cash because we are good Americans and spending money is essential. It made me wonder if some of that money, through the exchange of many hands, could come back to harm me. Perhaps today I touched the fifty-dollar bill that will be used to purchase a gun or gasoline to fuel a car that will injure me. I'm in one of those moods.

brian that deep elm sampler cd has four of my favorite FAVORITE favorite songs on it. tracks 3, 5, 13, and 15. haha listen to those!!! (this is like one of those times when you're sitting in a movie with someone who's already seen the movie, and during their favorite part, they'll say "watch this part!!!" as though you aren't already.)

when i take cds in to resell, i always feel really self-conscious because i go to my cool indie record store so i can get store credit (it's always more money if i get store credit, and i would have spent it there anyway) and i'm selling back things i'm embarrassed to own. i don't want it to ruin my indie cool credibility at the store. i am thinking about just selling the rest of my old cds on ebay since i have such paranoia.

I say "watch, WATCH!" all the time during Kevin Smith movies. It's so annoying!

I feel the same way. You think it's easy to walk up to the counter with Winger's "In The Heart Of The Young" and walk out with some semblence of dignity?

In other news, this website makes me think of you, somehow. http://iusedtobelieve.com/

It's true about the "black" names, y'know. My mom used to work with this woman whose name was Shamika. After awhile she started to apply to jobs using her middle name, Pamela, and got called in for interviews much more frequently.

That's so shitty. I don't think I'm subject to that same prejudice (since I review resumes at my work), but maybe I need to test myself or something.
